Moody Cattle Company is now raising a fourth generation rancher. Third generation cattleman, Scott Moody, has been involved in the cattle business all his life, and now plans to bring his son up on the ranch in Salem, Arkansas, as well.

During the week, Moody is on duty as a flight medic in North Central Arkansas. Off duty, he raises a small herd of Polled Hereford cattle. Moody Cattle Company currently runs 40 to 50 head in their cow-calf operation. They sell some calves through their local sale barn, and the registered calves are kept as replacements or sold through private treaty off the ranch.

When asked how he originally kept his cattle records, Moody responded, "On a notepad. A Big Chief pad and a crayon."

When Moody realized the time had come to make a change in his record keeping, he evaluated several different cattle software programs.

"CattleMax was the most economical," he said. "That doesn't mean it was the cheapest. But for the price, it did what I needed it to do so I could get the most out of it."

The biggest change Moody has seen in his record keeping with CattleMax is that his records are much easier to find and organize than with the old pen and paper system. He is also able to keep more accurate breeding and calving records.

"I really like having the ability to print everything off and take it to the field," Moody said.

He said he uses the calving worksheet often to gather his calving information in one place, to later record in CattleMax.

Moody has also attended several online workshops.

"I wish I would have had them when I first started," he said. "I wouldn't have had to learn by trial and error."

He said he appreciates the customer service he receives when he sends in questions, and especially the help he had getting started with CattleMax just a few years ago.
