Multiple Computers

How many computers can I use CattleMax on?

All CattleMax editions can be installed on one (1) computer. Any addition installation licensing can be purchased for $50 per computer. Licenses are for home/work, desktop/laptop, or other combinations provided they are for the same ranch.

How does CattleMax work on a network setup?

If you have a computer network (meaning that you have computers connected to each other to share data/files), we recommend that you install CattleMax on each computer that will be accessing the CattleMax file. (Licenses are needed for each computer you will have CattleMax on).

For the actual location of the CattleMax data file, we recommend storing the file on the main computer and pointing CattleMax to that file from the other computers, or putting the file on the network.

Multiple Herds

I have both commercial and registered cattle. How would I manage them in CattleMax?

All of the CattleMax editions can manage multiple herd files. You may choose to keep your cattle records in separate files or in the same file. It is recommended that producers purchase the edition that matches the focus of their operation, and manage other cattle in the same file or use the multiple herds feature.

Is it possible to keep separate herd files in CattleMax?

Yes! Some ranches may want to keep herd files completely separate, which is a viable option if the cattle are managed completely separate and there is not a need for records from the separate herds to be on the same report.

It is important to know that once records are entered into a separate CattleMax file, there is not a way to later automatically merge them or have cattle from separate files be on the same report.

If cattle are run/managed together, we recommend you setup one CattleMax file and use a certain field to distinguish between them (such as Category, Owner, Cattle Group, etc) since you can filter reports and records for these characteristics and cattle can be all on one report.

Editions

What are the main differences between the Commercial and the Registered Editions?

The main differences between the editions is that the Registered Cattle edition includes breed association interfaces, 3-generation pedigrees, ET/embryo records, and Simulated EPDs and Pedigrees features. The CattleMax Edition Comparison Chart has more specific information.

Can I later upgrade to another edition?

Yes! You can move from a small herd to a standard herd, or from the Commercial Cattle edition to the Registered Cattle edition by simply paying the difference in price.

When the payment is received, you will receive a new serial number to enable the new version. Your existing cattle records will transfer and the process takes less than five minutes.

Data export/import options

Can I export/save data to other formats, such as Excel?

Yes! Many ranches have additional programs they use for their ranch, such as accounting/financial software packages and cost analysis systems. Records in CattleMax can easily be exported/saved to Excel and Text format to help fit your additional record keeping needs.

Can I import records from other formats, such as from Excel or another cattle software program?

Yes! We are able to convert/transfer records from many other formats. We offer free conversion service for records from several other cattle software programs.

If you have cattle registered with a breed association, check with us to see if we are able to download an electronic copy of your registered cattle records directly into CattleMax.

For all other formats, spreadsheets, databases, etc, our conversion process starts at $100 and goes up depending on the complexity of the records. Please contact us for more information.

Technical Support Resources

What kind of technical support do I get?

Specific Features/Needs

Is there a way to keep track of pasture management, such as fertilizer and hay production?

Yes! CattleMax includes an area to record pasture details (such as Premises ID, total acreage, etc) and a Notes tab to record note date, category and note details.

I keep track of steers/stockers on an individual basis. Can I keep these records in CattleMax?

Yes! If you track any type of cattle on an individual basis (meaning you know the ear tag/ID number for each animal and want to track records this way), you can add them in as Calves and use the Category or Cattle Groups feature to distinguish between these certain cattle and your other calves when working with the records and reports.

Do you have a specific software for cattle that are tracked as a group (without individual identifications)?

No. The primary focus of CattleMax is to track cattle records on an individual level. While CattleMax does include a basic Stocker/Feeder Groups area for tracking transactions of cattle (number of head in, number of head out, etc), this feature is designed more as a way for cow-calf ranches to also track basic details for their stocker/feeder calves that are managed as a group/not individually identified.

Can the information in CattleMax be customized?

Yes! Many screens in CattleMax can be customized to your needs simply by clicking the Customize View link, such as the Medical, Breeding and Offspring tabs. In addition, you are welcome to enable/disable features in the software, as you can easily enable them later on and use them as your record keeping needs become more advanced.

I am interested in keeping accounting/financial records. What do you recommend?

All editions of the CattleMax software include a basic income and expense tracking feature to record entries such as date purchased, vendor, price, category and can also track income and expense entries by individual animals.

In addition, reports can be generated to list income and expense entries, and even narrow the entries to certain criteria (such as only purchases from a certain vendor, during a certain date range, etc).

For full accounting/financial needs (such as for depreciation), we highly recommend an accounting-specific software program such as QuickBooks to address your financial record keeping needs. Keeping your production and performance records in CattleMax is a great compliment to an accounting software, since many accounting programs are able to import  data from various formats, such as Excel and Text. (Records in CattleMax can easily be exported into these formats).

I have very specific reports that I use. Is there a way to have those in CattleMax?

Yes! The reporting options in CattleMax are flexible to your needs, whether you customize the pre-set reports or choose to work with your data file in the free Microsoft Access Companion reporting system that is included in all CattleMax editions.

General Questions

Can I keep the records I entered into the Trial version if I decide to purchase?

Yes! There are a few records in the sample file to work with, and you are welcome to enter a few of your own. Your records can easily be transferred into a new file if you decide to purchase CattleMax, which saves you time in getting your records entered into the software.

What are the system requirements to run CattleMax CS?

  • Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 or Mac with VirtualPC, Parallels or VMWare
  • Monitor that runs1024x768 resolution

If your computer does not meet these system requirements, please contact us for an alternative solution.

How does pricing work for existing customers when a new version is available?

Ranches that have purchased a previous version of CattleMax are eligible to purchase the current version for a discounted rate of 1/2 the full price. (Purchasing the new version is recommended but not required).

Records entered in previous versions are always (and easily) converted into the new version for no additional charge, so there is no need to worry about losing any data.

How much do updates cost and how are they obtained?

Updates to the current version are free and can be downloaded from the Updates page. They can also be ordered on CD for no charge. Updates are “patches” that are released from time to time that add in new features and address any issues that have been brought to our attention.
