Configuring Permissions for Sharing a CattleMax Herd File over a Network
In a networking environment, there are 2 sets of permissions that need to be verified: 1) local computer permissions and 2) network share permissions.
When conflicting permissions are set (full control for local permissions and read only for network permissions), Windows uses the most restrictive of the permissions.
To use CattleMax in a networked environment, all permissions must be configured properly. Below are instructions on these settings. If you have a network administrator, it is best to have them configure the network for you as they may have special settings.
Verify Herd File is not Read Only
Double click the Data folder (generally at c:\cattlesoft\cattlemax cs) and locate the CattleMax herd file. Right-click on this file and ensure "Read Only" is NOT checked. If "Read Only" is checked, uncheck this permission.
Verify Local File Permissions
Go to the folder that contains the CattleMax herd file. Right-click on this folder and choose Properties. Depending on your computer settings, you may see a "Security" tab. Make sure the "Write" box on the Security tab is checked.
Verify Network Share Permissions
Go to the folder that contains the CattleMax herd file. Right-click on this folder and choose the "Sharing" or "Sharing and Security" option.
You should see a button labeled "Permissions".If you do not see this button, you have Simple File Sharing Enabled.
To Disable Simple File Sharing (if you do not see a permissions button):
1. Cancel out of the Sharing screen.
2. From the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click "Folder Options".
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the list, locate and uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing".
5. Click OK and go back to the Sharing tab (right-click on the CattleMax folder) and now you should see a Permissions button. Click that button.
Ensure that both the Read and Change boxes are checked. If these boxes are not checked, you will receive an error.
