Customer Success Story - RX Simbrah
Sarah (Sally) Buxkemper, owner of RX Simbrah, has been in the cattle business for more than 50 years. Her ranch is located on the Colorado River, Runnels County, Texas between Ballinger and Rowena.
Sally says, "My grandmother, Lucy Kuhn, a pharmacist, had Hereford cows. Her brother, Boots Kubela, raised Brahmans in Matagorda County, Texas. When I moved to Runnels County in 1960, I put some Brahman bulls on the Hereford cows. Most neighbors thought I was crazy, but County Ag Agent, C.T. Parker, loved the results." From that point Sally has developed a business of breeding Simmental and Simbrah and Sim Angus composite seedstock.
"What is a composite?" you may ask. On her website, Sally answers that and many more questions about her breeding operation. But, to give you the quick explanation, "Composites are populations formed by combining two or more existing breeds or genetic pools, followed by some inter-se mating and possibly some re-creation. Matings are planned to try to avoid inbreeding in order to maintain valuable heterosis."
Sally runs around 150 cows and heifers on her ranch, and, besides the ranching, also has interests in a feed mill, real estate development and oil and gas production. She recently purchased some property she had been renting and currently the fences and pens are being updated, as well as cropland converted to pasture.
Coming from another software program to CattleMax about 2 years ago after learning of the software at the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course, Sally says she uses the Cattle Groups and Pasture records features most.
"I use the program every day and sometimes several times during a day," she comments. My advice to CattleMax users is to keep up with the records - update regularly. The pasture inventory report is one she uses more than any other, she says. She also makes use of the Gain Test feature in CattleMax for bulls and heifers, both her own and some owned by others.
Sally says her cattle business is combining heat tolerant genetics with improved beef quality, tenderness, and convenience. CattleMax fits her operation and makes her "Prescription Cattle" business easier. "I only have to remember to keep CattleMax updated and then there is one place to look for my cattle information!"
