Customer Success Story - Caldwell Farms
Caldwell Farms is a Certified Organic Grass-Fed Beef producer located near Milladore, Wisconsin. To produce that Certified Organic Grass-Fed Beef, Michael and Lorna Caldwell use Belted Galloways, or "Belties". The Caldwells chose the Belties, a beautiful heirloom breed from Scotland, because they are great foragers, making them the perfect breed for grass-fed beef production.
The Caldwells say the Belties adapt well to Central Wisconsin's cold winters. Where most cattle breeds add a thick layer of body fat for insulation in the winter, Belties grow an additional hair coat instead. "This coat of hair keeps body heat in so efficiently, the snow will not even melt on their back!" say the Caldwells.
Caldwell Farms markets their grass-fed beef through Beltie Beef LLC. Their grass-fed beef products are sold through stores in the upper Midwest, USA and directly to customers all over through the website.
To be a certified organic grass-fed beef producer, Caldwell Farms has to be audited annually by a USDA organic certifier. The farm's financial and cattle records are audited, as well as the physical operation itself. Michael and Lorna say, "Thanks to CattleMax, the audit of our cattle records is effortless!"
The certification process assures that the land used to produce the feed for the animals is free of herbicides, pesticides and other agrichemicals and has been so for 3 years prior to the feed production. The animals cannot receive any antibiotics or hormones throughout their entire life. The animals' life history must be carefully documented.
Caldwell Farms has been using CattleMax since 2002 with version 1 and continued upgrading with each new version, through the present version, CattleMax CS.
Michael and Lorna find the software critical for management and control measures in their registered Belted Galloway breeding stock and certified organic beef operation. Reports on all health care issues of their herd and progeny from their breeder bulls for purposes of marker assisted selection are readily available within minutes. When working the herd, it is easy to create a report to search for lost identification numbers (tattoo, main tag number, electronic identification tags, DNA tags or Bangs tags) to ascertain the cow's identity.
Caldwell Farms' goal: Combine the right animal, our God-given talents, and a healthful environment to produce the best grass-fed beef possible for our customers.
The Caldwells say, "You cannot manage what you cannot measure." They say CattleMax helps them manage the measurements in a fast and easy way.
